Our Stories
The inspiration behind My Heart’s Home
As a mother observing her 24-year-old son’s transition from an active classroom environment to the isolation of their living room couch, Lisa Wiederlight became profoundly aware of the systemic failures that are leaving adults with developmental disabilities and veterans without adequate support. The abrupt end of federally- mandated services for young adults with disabilities at age 21 often leads to a void in opportunities for community engagement, employment, socialization, recreation, and personal growth. Further, on any given night, approximately 35,000 veterans experience are unhoused–on the streets, on any given night.
In response, Lisa founded My Heart’s Home to create inclusive communities that provide safe, accessible, affordable housing, and paired with appropriate supports. The project’s goal is to ensure that individuals like her son, countless veterans, and older adults have the opportunity to lead fulfilling lives within a supportive environment. My Heart’s Home invites you to join us in this worthy endeavor—please contact us to learn how you can contribute your time, talent, or treasure to support the cause. Why My Heart’s Home
I’m sitting here looking at my almost 24 year-old son sitting on the couch. It’s bittersweet. He’s loving, smart, well-behaved after some turbulent years, and social. Yet, despite my best advocating for over a decade, he has made the dreaded transition like so many others like him, “From the classroom to the couch.”
